Athens’ newest talk-of-the-town carries a name (thirio means Savage beast) that promises intensity -and honestly, the experience is exactly that: a high-energy, “tight-squeeze,” yet undeniably intriguing dining night out.
The venue is tiny, built around two parallel bars. One faces the open kitchen; the other faces the backs of those at the first bar. Elbow-to-elbow sitting is inevitable, you’ll be brushing shoulders with your neighbor and sharing energy, which makes the term «fun dining» feel a bit oxymoron. When things get this cramped, the “fun” often gives way to the pressure of finishing quickly just to clear your spot.
Especially on slower days, the strict two-hour window feels like a “sitting curse” that disrupts the flow of the evening. Fortunately, rumors of an expansion into the space next door give us hope for some much-needed breathing room.
The food certainly has its moments, though at times it feels like the focus leans more toward “wow factor” rather than the soul and care the ingredients deserve.
Highlight of the night: The subversive cinnamon roll with rooster, «pastitsada» sauce, and Metsovone cheese cream. It’s a bold, playful, and deeply delicious combination that showcases the team’s true potential.
The staff is polite, efficient, and eager to help you settle in. My only minor gripe was the wine temperature, which wasn’t quite where it needed to be to let the bouquet truly shine.
Bottom line: “Thirio” has character and culinary grit. If it manages to tame the “cramped” anxiety and offer its guests a bit more time (and space), it will truly become the destination it deserves to be.
