The quest for good fish in Athens doesn’t always require white tablecloths and formal service. Often, the most powerful culinary thrills are found where raw ingredients take center stage: in courtyards scented with iodine, industrial settings next to central markets, and “fish taverns” that dare to experiment.
On the occasion of March 25th -the day of the iconic cod-and-garlic-dip duo- we map out five timeless and new spots across the city that honor the Aegean, offering everything from classic flavors to ultra-fresh raw seafood, creative dishes, and the most masterfully executed “golden” fry in Attica.

Polpo
Located opposite the Renti Central Market, the Katsikakis family -with twenty years of experience in supplying top-tier restaurants -has created an authentic destination for true foodies. Polpo brings fish-eating back to its roots: premium raw ingredients sourced directly from fishing boats and masterful grilling set within an unpretentious, “industrial” backdrop. Alongside succulent red mullets and delicate squid, the cod takes center stage -lightly fried and served with traditional bread-based skordalia (garlic dip). A value-for-money experience that blends the raw energy of the Market with the finesse of absolute freshness, proving that great fish doesn’t need complex recipes, just passion. Plus, the prices are exceptionally fair.

Zarkadoulas
Since 1999, Zarkadoulas in Nikaia has been serving “iodine-rich thrills” in a setting reminiscent of a remote, “barren line” Aegean island. Here, authenticity meets craftsmanship, making the tavern a landmark for lovers of “home-cooked” style seafood. The undisputed protagonist is the famous grilled crab-served half-cracked for easy picking- featuring juicy meat and a rich lemon-oil dressing that practically demands bread-dipping. The expert fryer turns out golden anchovies and small codfish without a trace of excess oil, while jumbo shrimps and generous salads round out a table that honors tradition in the most delicious way.

Argoura
In Tzitzifies, Nikos Michail has cultivated a “bohemian-artistic” gastronomic garden since 2010, infused with the essence of Evia and soulful Greek music. At Argoura, an eclectic mix & match of vintage chairs, antique radios, and dozens of flower pots creates a timeless holiday atmosphere, where a diverse international crowd gathers for the true essence of seafood. Here, the frying pan is absent, giving way to rare shellfish- like spinialo violets with rock samphire -and imaginative raw combinations, such as sea bass carpaccio and a stunning, modern take on the traditional “cod-and-garlic-dip” featuring pickled wild pistachios (tsikouda). From warm eggplant with smoked eel to the al dente sea urchin spaghetti, every dish is a daring iodine recital that confirms the chef’s creative genius.

Psariston
Since 2000, chef Vasilis Akrivos has transformed his “fish tavern” in Neo Irakleio into a must-visit destination for those seeking something beyond the ordinary. At Psariston, the intentionally messy, humor-filled decor sets the stage for an experience that strays from the beaten path. While top-tier ingredients (from red porgy to white seabream) are grilled to perfection, the heart of the menu beats with world-fusion flavors: fried taramosalata with ouzo, Symi-style popcorn shrimp with ginger, and smoked eel noodles that take umami to new heights. A bold fusion of tradition and innovation that intrigues the palate, making every visit a new culinary discovery.

Paramalo
Thanasis, famously known as “Tsaf” from Chalkida, brought his passion for seafood to Nea Kifisia, creating an ouzeri-style fish tavern that breathes the sea air. At Paramalo, the simplicity of blue and white meets premium raw ingredients arriving daily from Evia. The meal begins with ultra-fresh smooth clams and steamed date mussels in a lemony broth- perfect for dipping the high-quality sourdough bread -and continues with crispy fried crayfish tails and succulent squid. The grilled monkfish tails are a menu highlight, while the inviting courtyard under the pine trees offers the perfect escape for ouzo and seafood meze.
