OKUPA

There are places you simply visit—and places you want to become a part of. Okupa belongs to the second kind. A bold hybrid of boutique hotel, restaurant, urban hub, and multifunctional cultural space, it brings together travelers, Athenians, artists, and members of the city’s creative class under one aesthetically curated roof.

Tucked away on quiet Psaromiligkou Street, where Psyrri meets Kerameikos—a neighborhood still brimming with urban soul and blooming through creative hangouts and culinary spots. Okupa redefines the idea of “hospitality” in a way that’s at once elegant, cosmopolitan, and unmistakably Athenian.

The vibe? Like diving into an alternative, global microcosm where design, culture, and atmosphere coexist in a laid-back encounter between Athens and the international creative community. Curated with care by Nohad Boueiz and Andrea Zoumboulis, the space has an industrial feel, a studied mix of modern and vintage mid-century furniture, 60s and 70s textures, art pieces, warm lighting, and walls lined with carefully chosen vinyls and indie magazines. The gift shop hosts a selection of the best of the Greek design scene.

Its 32 rooms—some with private balconies, others more hostel-style—follow the same philosophy: a dynamic conversation between old and new. From the rooftop, views of Lycabettus Hill and the Acropolis frame a skyline that constantly reminds you you’re in the heart of a city where past and present are always in dialogue. There’s even a retro-style rooftop pool—reserved for hotel guests only.

Whether you’re sitting in the sunny garden with its big communal tables and concrete steps scattered with cushions, or tucked away in the mezzanine co-working lounge with reading corners and natural light, the atmosphere is relaxed yet creatively charged.

Music is essential to the experience: world jazz, soul, old-school disco—always on vinyl, always in tune with the moment. As the day progresses, so does the rhythm of Okupa.
Mornings are for coffee and focused work, afternoons for brunch, and evenings for gatherings over playful, music-inspired cocktails like the Synthaloma (a Paloma with citrus vodka), the Coltraine Sour, or the bold Snakefinger.

The Food: Comfort with an Edge

Brunch is served until 5 p.m., perfect for slow Sundays or a creative lunch break. The avocado toast has character, but the evening menu is where the kitchen shines—with a Mediterranean base, global accents, and dishes designed for sharing.

We recommend:
Mushroom Gyoza, served with a soy & ponzu dip and a drop of chili oil that lifts the flavor sky-high.
Freekeh salad with halloumi, pistachios and cherry tomatoes—crunchy, fresh, and unexpectedly sweet.
Crab burger, soft, umami-rich, and elegantly satisfying.
Lamb skewers, marinated with cumin and served with a cool smoked yogurt and cucumber dip—tender, fragrant, and bold.

A Different Kind of zen Energy

Head down to the basement, a softly lit space with natural light and ancient Athenian finds, where wellness sessions like restorative yoga, pilates, and body conditioning take place.

But perhaps the most meaningful part of Okupa is its bond with the neighborhood. The space never forgets where it belongs: it opens its doors to local makers and minds through craft bazaars, open talks, and community-centered events—turning the hotel into a living, breathing piece of urban Athens.

Best for

Ideal for digital nomads, curious travelers, and Athenians who’ve grown tired of the same old options. Great for lazy brunches, creative co-working hours, early dinners that turn into spontaneous nights out, or just being present in a space that gets it.

Notes for Improvement

Greek wines. With its aesthetic, energy, and attention to detail, OKUPA could easily become a wine ambassador, too.
